Almere is one of the newest towns in the Netherlands, having been planned as a relief area for Amsterdam. The name reminds of the old name of the Zuiderzee, Almere. Before that Tacitus, the Roman historian, named it Flevo lacus (lake Flevo), but that is not 100% accepted as fact.
