Rutten is a village in the Noordoostpolder in Flevoland province. Mr. Hans
van Heijningen got an image of the village flag from the Ruttense Society
for Village Interests (Dorpsbelangen). The flag is green over blue;
over all a red "R"; on green weird colored clouds, and green grass-patches;
on blue blue waves and two sailing ships; from the top of the "R" dangles
a red rope; in the center of the "R" is a white pole, topped by c. 5 grey
birdies outlined white.
Rutten used to be a village in the North of the huge island of Urk,
named "Ruthne", until the 14th century. The name may derive from old Germanic
"ruhita", meaning rough shrubs.
