The village of Spijk is in Delfzijl municipality, east Groningen province.
It was until 1 Jan 1990 part of Bierum. On the occasion of the "Spijkster
Gastendag" (Day of the Guests of Spijk) in 1966, organized by the "Stichting
Dorpsbelangen" (foundation for village-interests) the "Spijkster Vlag"
was adopted, derived from the village Coat of Arms, described at this
webpage.
"Five equally wide horizontal stripes of blue, white, black, white,
and blue, with an over the length of 1/3 flagheight towards the hoist a
lengthened yellow triangle, with in the center a shortened red St. Andrew's
cross, in a blue ring, of which the diameter is equal to 1/2 flagheight."
The lengthened triangle with ring and St. Andrew's cross is the main
element of the village Coat of Arms. The stripes white and blue stand for the wavy
lines in the Coat of Arms. and the white and blue stripes are the colors of the
lion of the Ubbena-family. The colors yellow and blue are the colors of
the Alberda-Coat of Arms. Yellow points at corn, and the agricultural character
of the village. The sharp edge of the triangle symbolizes the name of Spijk
(=spike).
