Arcen en Velden is a municipality on an island in the Maas river in north
Limburg, consisting of the villages Arcen (seat), Lomm and Velden. Number
of inhabitants: 8.962 on an area of 42,03 km². Its brassband is one
of the finest in the Netherlands and it is regarded as one of the nicest
places in our country. Not long ago it was deemed proper to spell it 'Arsen',
but without giving notice someone ordered it to be spelled 'Arcen' again.
<it is near the German border, where Arsen means 'Arsenicum'..>
The castle on the flag (adopted 5 Jun 1978) stands for 'arcen' as in
'Arc de triomphe', a gate or castle. I guess the oakleaf stands for the
bushy surroundings.
