Population (1 Jan 2003): 17.888; area: 36,90 km². Settlements: Valkenburg
(seat), Berg en Terblijt, Geulhem, Houthem, IJzeren, Oud-Valkenburg, Schin
op Geul, Sibbe, Vilt, Walem. On 1 Jan 1982 the former municipalities of
Valkenburg-Houthem and Berg en Terblijt merged to form the new municipality
of Valkenburg aan de Geul. "aan de Geul" was added to the name to distinguish
the municipality from Valkenburg in Zuid-Holland.
Flag: three equally wide horizontal stripes of blue, yellow and red.
This flag was adopted 10 Mar 1959 by municipal resolution. The colors
are derived from the municipal arms.
Berg en Terblijt is a former municipality in Limburg province, since
1 Jan 1982 part of Valkenburg aan de Geul. When it was dissolved there
were 2700 inhabitants, living in Berg (seat), Geulhem, Terblijt and Vilt.
Flag: Red with a white hoist chevron; at the hoist a black key with
the bit turned towards the fly. adopted 16 Feb 1971 by municipal resolution.
The key is from the municipal arms, and was derived from the arms of
the Sint Servaas-chapter in Maastricht, to which Berg once belonged.
