Coat of Arms

Blazon: I rødt en gull øsekar. In English: Gules a scoop or.
Approved by the crown prince-regent's resolution of 20 November 1987 after a drawing by Tore Engen. [c2j88]
The municipal web site explains that the design shows a baler or a scoop, as seen from above - a spoon-like hand tool for removing water that entered a boat. The island municipality thus highlights its historical dependence on boats.
The web site also explains that the original design for the Vega municipal arms was the "Nordland's boat", that the Vega major "took with himself" when he was elected the county governor - and it eventually became the Nordland county arms.
Personally, I find this design way too similar and easily confused with a shovel, but who am I to say that against the ruling of the Norwegian heraldic authorities and even the royal council.
