Second version of the flag

Version 2 of the flag adopted February 6th 2017. The main differences found on version 2 of the Kaiapoi Flag is that it has a deeper blue and a more vivid yellow + a conventional white seam at the hoist replacing the black seam of the previous flag. The colours are more in keeping of those of Kaiapoi and is more attractive to look at replacing the somewhat washed out look of version 1 of the Kaiapoi flag. The new version of the flags was first hoisted at the Kaiapoi civic centre offices on April 20th 2021.

Flag Competition

Inspired by the New Zealand flag competition my home town Kaiapoi has opened a flag competition for a flag to represent it. The competition opened on December 6th 2015 and was due to run until December 21st but has been extended to run until January 29th 2016. The criteria for the flag design was that the flag include elements of Kaiapoi's history and heritage or geography. The winning flag would be 65 cm x 150 cm and would be announced at Kaiapoi on Waitangi Day February 6th (Waitangi Day being New Zealand's national day). Competition details can be found on or entry forms can be obtained from Harcourts Kaiapoi, 154 Williams Street, Kaiapoi 7630, Canterbury, New Zealand

It was a happy and expectant crowed that gathered at Kaiapoi's Trousselt Park to celebrate New Zealand's national day (Waitangi Day) but also to witness the unfurling of Kaiapoi's new flag. Jackie Watson, who is Chairperson for Kaiapoi-Tuahiwi Community Board officiated at the ceremony. In her speech the design of the flag was outlined along with the people who contributed to its design (three people had their flag designs combined/amalgamated to form the Kaiapoi flag).

At a little after 10.12 a.m. New Zealand time the new Kaiapoi flag was raised to the applause of the crowd. Jackie Watson was assisted at the unfurling ceremony by You/Me/Us member Brent Cairns who raised the flag. You/Me/Us is a Kaiapoi community organisation and organised the Kaiapoi flag competition held in late 2015 to early 2016.

The company involved in making the flag was Colourworx Dye Sublimation based in Auckland. It is interesting that the sewn seam on the hoist of the flag was black not white.

This flag is an amalgamation of three designs forwarded in the recent Kaiapoi flag competition. The flag is a bicolour of blue over yellow (Kaiapoi's colours), in its centre a white K for Kaiapoi. Superimposed over the K in the centre of the flag is a black bridge, this is Kaiapoi's iconic swing bridge which spans the river Kaiapoi. The artist was John Murphy.
