Explanation of the flag

The arms of Uppland was granted at the time of the funeral of Gustavus I (1560); a revised grant was made on 17 November 1939. The orb would probably be a sign for Uppland as the province of Sweden was (and still is) the political centre of Sweden.

The County of Uppsala consist of a large part of the historical province of Uppland and use the same arms (and flag, a banner of the arms) as Uppland. The arms of Uppland also makes up one field in the arms of the County of Stockholm and is therefore also present in its flag.
