Today's New York Times has an article on another of those tongue-in-check-but-hoping-to-make-a-point secessionist movements. In this case it concerns my own home area- Long Island, New York. The article included a photo of the originator of the movement, one Cesidio Tallini, wearing a T shirt with his proposed flag for Independent Long Island. The flag also appears on Mr. Tallini's website (and on a lot of merchandise available there) http://www.ilination.com and http://cyberterra.com/ili/ili-flag-medium.png.

The flag is a medium blue rectangle, with an orange horizontal stripe in the middle. The stripe is given a swallowtail appearance by a blue triangle at the fly end, and there are 2 orange stars above the stripe and 2 below (one set of upper & lower stars are near the hoist and the other set is about midway along the length). The stripe represents the island itself, with its forked eastern end, and the four stars represent the two counties- Nassau and Suffolk- and two boroughs- Brooklyn and Queens- which together comprise the island.

Whether intentional or not, the flag is somewhat similar to the flag designed for the proposed Peconic County, which was a more serious attempt to establish a new county on eastern Long Island. I know the Peconic County flag was actually produced, because I have seen it flying, but I don't know yet if the Independent Long Island flag is actually produced, or just appears on R shirts, coffee mugs, key chains &c.
