The website at provides a large image of the seal, and reports that the shield of stars and stripes represents Beverly Hills' status as a city of the United States of America; the bear flag represents the California republic of 1846; The eagle holding the serpent represents the period of Mexican sovereignty over what is now the state of California. The City Hall represents the seat of government in Beverly Hills. The five-pointed star represents the five-member City Council, the governing body of the City of Beverly Hills; and the lion of Leon and castle of Castile represent  Spanish rule, from 1542 to 1821, over what is now the state of California.
