On June 23, 2026, the Gilpin County Board of County Commissioners officially adopted Gilpin County's first official flag. The flag was created through a community Flag Design Contest that invited residents, employees, students, and others with connections to Gilpin County to participate. The community flag contest was held as part of Gilpin County's celebration of Colorado's 150th anniversary, creating a lasting symbol that reflects the county's history, heritage, and future. The Board extends its sincere appreciation to everyone who participated and submitted designs. Special recognition is given to Gilpin County resident and employee Shaun Wicen, whose design was selected and adopted as the County's official flag.
About the Flag
The Gilpin County flag was designed to reflect the county's rich history, natural beauty, and enduring community spirit. Each element was intentionally chosen to represent the people, places, and heritage that make Gilpin County unique.
Moose – Represents the moose that roam throughout Gilpin County and symbolize the area's abundant wildlife and natural environment.
Mining Tools – The pickaxe and hammer honor Gilpin County's rich mining heritage and the historic communities of Central City and Black Hawk, whose gold discoveries helped shape Colorado's history.
Mountain Silhouette – Represents the county's mountain landscape, scenic vistas, and the rugged beauty that defines life in Gilpin County.
Colors
Blue reflects Colorado's clear skies and is inspired by the official Gilpin County logo.
Green represents the county's forests and natural landscapes while complementing the official county branding.
Gold honors Gilpin County's gold mining legacy and the prosperity and history that grew from it.
From Contest to County Flag
2026 is the year of Colorado's 150th anniversary. The flag contest was initiated during this year to commemorate the anniversary.
March 2026 – Contest announced
May 2026 – Twelve designs submitted
May 2026 – Public voting held
June 2026 – Board reviewed submissions and public feedback
July 2026 – Official flag adopted
