Description of the flag

In the "North Adams Transcript", 4 March 2006, Natalia Pelayo related the installation of the town flag of Cheshire in the State House of Massachusetts in Boston. The flag was designed by the Cub Scouts of Cheshire Pack 31. The project started when Robert Galisa, the leader of Pack 31, visited the State House with his family. He and his 11-yr old son were very disappointed because they could not find the flag of Cheshire among the 299 town flags hanging in the Great Hall. The Scouts designed a flag and shown it to the Cheshire Board of Selectmen, which approved it. "The white flag has Cheshire written in blue across the top and the red town logo in the center. On the right there is a gray cheese press, representing the Cheshire Cheese Press Monument located at the Church and School streets. The Stafford Monument, the gray dome shaped figure on the left of the flag, honors Joab Stafford, one of the first Cheshire settlers."

A first copy of the flag was sewed and painted by the Scouts and presented to the State House on 21 February. The town administration has decided to purchase five flags to be placed in the Town Hall, Historical Commission, and fire and police stations. Only 51 towns of Massachusetts do not have their flag hanging in the State House. According to R. Kilpeck, Superintendant of the Bureau of State Office Buildings, the Scouts of Cheshire have inspired some of these flagless towns.
