The City of Brandon has an official flag and pledge. With a unanimous vote at its Monday, May 22, regular meeting, the Brandon City Council approved the Our Spirit Shines flag along with a pledge written by three Brandon Elementary School fourth-grade students. The flag, which won by 13 votes and garnered 34 percent of the 515 votes cast, features a sun with yellow rays that shine across a blue sky to signify a bright future of a growing city along with rolling hills in the red and black colors of the Brandon Valley School District.
The pledge, written by Tanner Smith, Addison Swenson and Julia Roy - students in Katee Lane's class - reads, "I pledge dedication to the flag and community of Brandon, South Dakota, with love and respect to our citizens, with kindness and dignity to all."
"Every flag that has been created has a pledge, so we thought this one should have one, too," said Smith. The writing process was a team effort. "We worked together, thought of ideas and picked what we liked," Smith said. "(My favorite part) was being able to do it with my friends."
Polls were open April 12 to 30 after the Brandon City Flag Committee whittled
39 designs down to eight for the final online vote. Zach DeBoer, a Brandon
Valley High School graduate and owner of Exposure Gallery & Studios in Sioux
Falls spearheaded the project, which was funded through DeBoer's residency at
Robert Bennis Elementary School and was part of the South Dakota Arts Council's
Artists in Schools & Communities program. Flag designs came from multiple
sources, including third- and fourth-grade elementary school students, digitally
from the public and physical drawings dropped off at Sunshine Foods.
The image is captioned "This flag -- with yellow rays of sunshine in a bright blue sky shining across rolling his of black and red, colors that signify pride in the school and community -- was selected as the official flag for the City of Brandon."
