"The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (often referred to as The University of Minnesota, Minnesota, the U of M, UMN, or simply the U) was created by the Minnesota Territorial Laws of 1851, Chapter 3 Laws, establishing the University of Minnesota (University), vesting its government in a Board of Regents (Board), and constituting the charter under which the University is governed. The Laws became effective February 25, 1851, which shall be the founding date of the University."
The flag is a maroon horizontal background with the University's Seal in golden outline. The Seal was adopted by The Board of Regents as the seal of the Regents of the University of Minnesota on May 9, 1939.
