Description of the flag

A crimson flag, with the seal in gold, and above the name of the institution.

Tuskegee University (until recently known as Tuskegee Institute - www.tuskegee.edu) is one of the major traditionally Afro-American institutions of higher education in the United States. Founded immediately after the War Between the States during the so-called Reconstruction period in American history, 'Skegee (as it is generally known to generations of students, faculty members, graduates, and friends) has pioneered in the education of this particular ethnic group. Together with its sister institutions such as Fisk University in Nashville, Howard University in Washington DC, Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, and Morehouse College in Atlanta, Tuskegee was largely responsible for the creation of an Afro-American middle class by the end of the 19th Century which was to provide a leadership cadre for the Afro-American community throughout much of the 20th. A pioneer in scientific agricultural education, as personified by Dr George Washington Carver, and through the dynamic leadership of its longtime president, Booker T. Washington, Tuskegee is one of the most distinguished American universities.

My images use seal and lettering from http://tuskegee.images.worldnow.com/images/incoming/forms/Domestic.pdf (official document, no longer available, my unstretching), modified to match the flag photo: extra rings of the seal removed and image flipped.

University Monogram

[Tuskegee University, Alabama] image by António Martins-Tuválkin, 16 January 2008

The University monogram is a capital serif "T" superimposed on a smaller uncial "u". This does not show on the official seal and flag(s), but on this flag(s) at www.tuskegee.edu/Global/story.asp?S=6729495: a photo is captioned "The University's crimson and gold logo is visible on the ceiling banners and the front entrance of the cafeteria". This is one (or several) 1:2 very dark red flag with the University monogram in medium red, golden fimbriated, black shadowed, very large and centered on it. The sport flag of the local football team, the Tuskegee Golden Tigers, uses as its emblem the said monogram charged with a leaping tiger: www.scorehere.com/images/ncaa%20logos/TuskegeeGoldenTigers.gif.

At tuskegee.images.worldnow.com/images/7440393_SS.jpg, what seems to be an official flag (as these go), waved by a uniformed player during a match, probably in late 2006: The said emblem on the center of a medium red flag (contrasting with the dark red uniforms of the player) and two golden yellow stylized tiger paw prints, at lower hoist and upper fly.
