The first flag of the Majlis, designed at the beginning of the 1980s, reflects
the strong Islamization drive of the ruling elite at that time. The white
disk is inscribed with a verse from the Koran in bold black Thuluth Arabic
lettering. This flag was a typical product of those years, when the Maldive
government was promoting Islam with vehemence and intensity.
The flag was changed when a new building was built for the
Majlis in 1999. The new flag did away with the Arabic lettering.

The Parliament unanimously voted for the creation of a multiparty system on June 2, 2005. Prior to this ruling, political parties were not allowed under the Maldivian legal system.
The first registered parties were:
- the Maldivian Peoples' Party (DRP)
- the Islamic Democratic Party (IDP)
- the Justice Party (AP)
- the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)

The party chairman from 2005 to 2010, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, was President of the Maldives from 1978 to 2008. The flag of the party (image is blue with the party emblem in white (and not in full colors) and the letters "DRP" below.

The flag of the MDP (website) is yellow (photos), either with the emblem of the party (scales of justice) in blue or with the emblem and the letters "MDP" in black.

During protests on International Women's Day, back in 2012, demanding free elections, the flag of the MDP was either light orange with the emblem in grey (photo, photo) or orange with the emblem in black (photo).

The scales seems to be grey but they must be in fact light blue.
When I was in Maldives Islands this party flag was hoisted in many places in Male. I have photos of four variants:
- Dark yellow with blue scales, the most common (enclosed in the party headquarters);
- Dark yellow with blue scales and below letters "MDP" in blue (the most uncommon);
- Dark yellow with black scales (shade of yellow seems to exist from normal yellow to orange);
- Dark yellow with black scales and below the letters "MDP" also in black (shade of yellow seems to exist from normal yellow to orange).
