The municipality of Susurluk (40,323 inhabitants in 2012, 23,544 in the town of Susurluk; 64,482 ha) is located north-east of Balıkesir.
The Susurluk scandal surfaced with a car crash on 3 November 1996, near Susurluk. The victims included the deputy chief of the Istanbul Police Department, a Member of Parliament who led a powerful Kurdish clan, and Abdullah Çatlı, the leader of the Grey Wolves. The accident revealed the close relationship between the Turkish government, the armed forces, and organized crime.

The flag of Susurluk (photo) is white with the municipality's emblem in the middle. "Belediyesi" means "Municipality". The former flag of Susurluk (photo) was white with the municipality's emblem in the middle.
The emblem of the municipality features a glass of Susurluk ayran.
Susurluk ayran (a drink made with yoghurt and water), which is unique to the north-western province of Balıkesir’s Susurluk district and has become famous abroad as well as in Turkey since 1950s, draws particular interest for its creamy foam and taste. The ayran is so delicious because it is made of natural yoghurt.
Susurluk ayran, which is different other types of ayran thanks to a number of unique features, is sold by dozens of facilities, shops and gas stations on the İzmir-Istanbul highway. It was first produced and sold by “ayran seller Şükrü” in the 1950s, and started to be widely consumed by passersby on the highway thanks to the advice of those who taste it.
