Description of the flag

Similar to the Alameda Yacht Club flag is the flag of the City of Alameda. Unlike the straight bar on the A of the yacht club flag, the bar on the A of the city flag is angled. At this time I have no other information about the flag itself.

Alameda is a city on an island on the east side of San Francisco Bay bordering Oakland in Alameda County. It has a population of about of about 75,000 and was the former home of Alameda Naval Air Station which has now closed. The city is noted for its many Victorian style homes.

The source for the image shown here is the County Committee on Fine Arts. I have seen the City of Alameda flag at a flag display towards the north end of the island (the city of Alameda is on an island) and outside the city offices on Santa Clara Avenue.

Designer of the flag

My Dad, Donald Ingraham, designed the flag back in the late 80's early 90's. There was a city wide contest for the design and he won. Got his name and picture in the Time Star newspaper with an article. I remember he used to have a copy of that article, but I can't find it now.

I remember he was very proud of this design for a few reasons:

  1. Keeping the nautical look to compliment Alameda's "Island City" reputation
  2. Making it easy enough for a kid to draw
  3. Incorporating the A for Alameda into the anchor in the middle
