The Impact of News and Symbols on Civic and Cultural European Identity Medium: article in a non-vexillological source Main author(s):Michael Bruter Language:English Source title: Comparative Political Studies Source number (date): 36.10 (2003) Source pages: 1148&-1179
This article empirically explores the impact of symbols of European
integration and good or bad news about Europe on individuals’
European identity. The analysis is based on a distinction between civic
and cultural components of identity, which enables testing of the model
in a way that could not be done with existing survey instruments. The
model depicts these two components as conceptually and empirically
distinct and responding differently to various cues in the environment.
The findings showthat many respondents identify with Europe and the EU,
mostly in civic terms, and explain how citizens and institutions
interact to nurture identities. They show the strong impact of symbols
and news on European identity. Other findings include the predominant
effect of symbols on cultural identity and news on civic identity. The
results have profound implications for our understanding of European
integration, political behavior, and minority integration in multicultural
societies.

(in English: Illustrated hand atlas of geography and statistics in 48 coloured maps.) Medium: book Main author(s):Traugott Bromme Edition (publisher:
place): Krais & Hoffmann:
Stuttgart (Germany) Language:German (High) Edition date:1862 (1st ed.)
Remarks: Containing seven colour plates with 40 flags each.
Available on
line.
Apart from the Swiss flag with inverted colours and i being listed
as part of “Deutschland”, I had noted several other
discrepancies on the flag plate:
if the atlas had been published
in 1862, why was there no flag of the Confederate States of America,
which had been in existence for at least a year before the atlas was
published;
why was there a flag of Texas and no other state flag,
when the Republic of Texas had been part of first the US and then the
CS since the late 1840s at least; and
why was there a script
capital letter "L" (presumably standing for King Leopold I) on the
central yellow stripe of the Belgian flag, and when was this letter
removed?
I concluded that from some of the internal evidence the flag plate
actually predated the publication date of the atlas by at least a
decade and possibly one and a half decades, and may well have
originally been prepared for earlier editions of the atlas and had
not been edited.
Ron Lahav, 20 Jan 2006
The plates do of course contain several errors, some of them quite
irritating. However, I do not think that this means the plates had been
prepared in 1852 or the like. For most of the flag books or plates of
this age, you have a lot of outdated information, old flags, wrong
flags, missing flags. This is most probably due to the fact that the
authors usually used unreliable old sources, without citing them, of
course. Dating of undated flag books or plates thus becomes a puzzle. Marcus Schmöger, 05 Feb 2006
