After the invasion of the northern part of Cyprus and the expelling of most Greek Cypriot inhabitants, 9 out of the 39 Cypriot municipalities (Akanthou, Famagusta, Karavas, Kyrenia, Kyhtrea, Lapithos, Lefkonikon, Lysi and Morphou) were "displaced" to the southern part of the island, while new municipalities were established by the Turkish Cypriot authorities.
Northern Cyprus is divided into 28 municipalities grouped in 6 districts, as follows:

The Lefke district was established on 27 December 2016, separating from Güzelyurt.

The administrative reform initiated in 2016 will reduce in 2018 the number of municipalities to 15, as follows:

Municipalities in italics will remain unchanged. The new municipalities are:
- Çatalköy: Çatalköy + Esentepe
- Lapta: Lapta + Alsancak
- Değirmenlik: Değirmenlik + Akıncılar
- Gönyeli: Gönyeli + Alayköy
- Güney Mesarya (Southern Mesaoria): Akdoğan + İnönü + Vadili + Paşaköy + Beyarmudu
- Kuzey Mesarya (Northern Mesaoria): Geçitkale + Serdarlı + Tatlısu
- Gazimağusa: Mağusa + Yeni Boğaziçi
- Mehmetçik: Mehmetçik + Büyükkonuk
- Yeni Erenköy: Yeni Erenköy + Dipkarpaz

The Cyprus Turkish Municipal Labour Union was established in 1976. At the end of 2013, membership was about 980.
