Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a silver (=white) field is a red, rampant, double queued lion, armed and tongued golden (=yellow).
According to source the arms show the lion of the dukes of Limburg, who granted the city rights in the 2nd half of the 13th century. The first seal from around 1280 already shows the lion, also all later seals of the city. In 1919 and 1973 the arms were confirmed, but without the crown of the arms of Limburg. According to Ralf Hartemink the arms of Herzogenrath were also used by the rulers of the city and can be seen in the arms of several villages, mainly in the Netherlands, such as Vaals and Kerkrade.
