Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, on a base Vert a lion passant Or, armed and tongued Azure.
Meaning:
In 1316 the Lords of Diepholz built a castle named Leuenvorde (= lion's ford) as a protection of the Stemwede Shire against raids of the Bishops of Minden. The lion is a modification of the family arms of the Diepholz kin. Next to the castle a market town developed, which became seat of a district or shire (German: Amt). At the beginning of the 18th century the Duke of Braunschweig fixed the name as "Lemförde", in order to avoid confusions with Lauenförde market town, today a municipality in
Holzminden County. Although derived from the lion of the Lords and later Counts of Diepholz the tinctures of the lion are those of the Welfen kin. The flag colours are a repetition of the shield colours.
