Tabarz and the neighbouring Cabarz had belonged to the Benedictine Reinhardsbrunn Monastery since the end of the 14th century. When the monastery was secularised in 1525, both became parts of Reinhardsbrunn district (German. Amt) of the Electorate of Sachsen, later of the Saxonian duchies as follows: Sachsen-Gotha (1640), Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg (1672) and Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha (1826). Due to the end of copper mining the local people became impoverished, but tourism since the 19th century made things better in the area. In 1925 Klein Tabarz, first mentioned in 1614, and Groß Tabarz merged and in 1946 Cabarz was untied with both. In 2017 Tabarz gained the title of a spa.
The triplemount is representing the Inselberg, a local mountain. Tower and antenna are representing the broadcast station on its top. The firs are canting as the name means "ford in a fir forest". The heart is referring to Thüringen, also called the green heart of Germany. The green colour also is referring to the many local forests.
