Coat of Arms

Shield Argent, a goat-headed eagle Sable armed Gules, each claw flanked by a 6-point star Or.
Meaning:
The city was founded around 1250. The first seal from 1261 displayed the eagle of the Counts of Ziegenhain, which became extinct in 1450 and had their main dominions in the area, beneath a trefoil-shaped arch, crowned by three towers. Since the 2nd seal from the 14th century the buildings had been removed. The stars may be an attribute of St. Mary, patron saint of Hainau Monastery, which had been landlord of the city to 1246. The position of the stars as well as the colour of the tongue and claws of the animal have changed several times during the centuries and are now displayed according to the oldest seal.
