Hirschberg Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale; at dexter Argent a demi-eagle Sable couped per pale, crowned, armed and tongued Gules; at sinister Gules a sinister facing stag rampant Or.
Meaning:
The local castle, probably built before 1200, was seat of Franconian commissionaires in 1232 and was under direct imperial rule since 1296. Shortly after it was pawned to the Reeves of Plauen. It was aacquired by the Margraves of Meißen in 1357 and in 1359 by the Kings of Böhmen as an imperial fiefdom of 2nd degree. It was given to the reeves in 1549 and to the Counts of Reuß in 1572. The Princes of Reuß-Gera resided in the city between 1680 and 1711. Hirschberg was called a market town in 1397, had a proper mayor and council in 1479 including the low-level cognisance and city rights due to the Bohemian pattern. The stag (German: Hirsch) is a canting element and based on the family arms of Hirzperc kin, known by the personal arms of Rudegerus of Hirzperg. The eagle is considered to be a differentiation of the imperial eagle. The pattern is known from seals since the 17th century.
