Colditz Coat of Arms

Shield Gules a castle Argent with three towers and open port, impending above from the lower embattled central tower an escutcheon Or charged with a lion rampant Sable, the other towers with domes topped by balls charged with an escutcheon each, at dexter Argent a heraldic rose Gules seeded Or, at sinister parted per fess, above a demi-lion issuant Sable, beneath bendy of seven of Argent and Gules.
Meaning:
In 1046 the local castle was mentioned as a possession of the German kings. It was acquired in 1083 by Count Wiprecht of Groitzsch and regained by the kings in 1153. After 1200 the Lords of Colditz established a town, basically just a market square, which was called a city in 1265. They established also a mint in 1318. In 1404 the city was acquired by the Margraves of Meißen, in 1485 by the Ernestine branch of the kin. In 1408 council and mayor existed. Until 1543 the city had been manorial lord of two villages. Since 1557 the city held the high level cognisance. The arms probably existed since the 13th century. The lion of the margraves was added in 1404. The dexter shield displays the arms of the Burgraves of Altenburg, the most important kin of the Pleißenland. The sinister shield displays the arms of the lords as former local rulers. The building is stressing the character of a city.
