Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale, at dexter in a field Azure a sinister-facing lion rampant barry of eight of Argent and Gules, at sinister in a field Argent three chevrons Gules.
Meaning:
The arms are known as such since the 16th century, when they appear on local courtyard seals. The had been first displayed in 1577 in Rotenburg Castle and could also be found within Wessel's armourial from 1621. Ever since the seals and arms have displayed the same composition. The lion barry is the lion of Hessen. The chevrons are taken from the arms of the Lords of Eppstein. From 1185-1535 the city was a possession of the Lords of Eppstein(-Königstein). In 1492 the Counts of Hessen acquired several rights and possessions in the city, hence the addition of the lion. In 1581 the city became part of the Archbishopric of Mainz, but the arms remained unchanged.
The arms were approved on 6 February 1953 and again on 3 June 1977.
