Hettstedt is in Mansfeld-Südharz county in the former Mansfelder Land county and has around 20,000 inhabitants. The flag is red over white with centred arms and was introduced in 1994.

Shield Argent, St. James the Elder as a pilgrim nimbed and dressed Or and coated Vert, holding two inescutcheons, at dexter Argent three bars Gules and at sinister quartered with two quarters Argent three bars Gules and two quarters lozengy of Argent and Gules.
St. James the Elder is the patron saint of the city. The dexter shield held by St. James shows the arms of the Counts of Querfurt, the quartered sinister shield those of Mansfeld-Querfurt, the families that ruled the area until the 16th century. The illustration in Günther 1996a has an additional scroll saying "Hettstedt" above the pilgrim.
