Prem Coat of Arms

Shield parted by a bar Azure charged with three billets lozengy Argent in fess, above Argent a griffin-lion issuant Gules holding a boat hook Azure by his forepaws, beneath Or a laurel Vert flanked by two 5-point stars Azure.
Meaning:
The griffin-lion, a lion with the head of a griffin, is the oldest apocryphal heraldic animal of the Welfen kin. It is referring to the Premonstratensian Steingaden Monastery, as it had been the favourite abbey of the kin. It owned large estates in the village, until it was secularised in 1803. The boat hook is symbolising rafting of timber on the Lech River, which had been an important business line in the past. The bar with lozenges, the laurel and the stars are taken from the personal arms of Johann Georg of Lori, a co-founder of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, who was born in 1723 in Gründl near Prem. The stars are furthermore attributes of St. Mary, who was the former patron saint of the local parish church, which is now dedicated to St. Michael.
