Presentation of Mojácar

The municipality of Mojácar (6,403 inhabitants in 2019; 7,154 ha; municipal website) is located 90 km north-east of Almería.T he municipality is mostly composed of the town of Mojácar (1,586 inh.), located 2.5 km from the sea, and of Mojácar Playa (Mojácar Beach; 4,959 inh.), the dwellings more recently established along the seashore.

Mojácar was settled from the 6th-7th centuries to the middle 13th century in a place known as Monte Sacrum (Sacred Mount), today Old Mojácar. One of the best preserved Moorish cisterns in the Kingdom of Granada is found near river Aguas.
At the end of the 13th century, the village was relocated to its present-day's site. The old village might have been destroyed by an earthquake or abandoned by its inhabitants in search of a safer place against Christian raids.
In 1488, all Moorish villages of the districts surrendered to the Christians but Mojácar. Alabez, commander of Mojácar, met Captain Garcilaso de la Vega in La Fuente and told him: "I am as Spanish as you and we have been living here for more than seven hundred years. Now you ask us to leave, while I never took arms against Christians. It would be fair to consider us as brothers and not enemies, and to allow us plowing our land. Rather than surrender as a coward, I prefer to die as a Spanish."

Symbols of Mojácar

The flag of Mojácar was chosen by the local population. Gabinete Heraldico, heraldry and flag specialists, designed three options that were uploaded to the Town Hall’s Facebook page.
The flag is not fully official yet. It still has to be approved by the Directorate General of the Local Administration for registration on the Andalusian Register of Local Entities. The relevant Resolution shall be published in the Andalusian official gazette.
