Presentation of Mohedas de la Jara

The municipality of Mohedas de la Jara (453 inhbitants in 2015; 6,042 ha) is located on the border with Extremadura (Province of Cáceres), 140 km west of Toledo and 60 km of Talavera de la Reina.

Mohedas de la Jara is named for an Arab world meaning "a scrubby place" and the Spanish world jara, "a rockrose". There is no record of the foundation of the town, which was, most probably, established by shepherds and bee-keepers from Talavera. The main colonists of the place, however, were Mozarabs from Toledo, who named the place Toledillo. The town subsequently incorporated the hamlets of Aldeanueva de San Bartolomé (Aldeanovita), Campillo de la Jara, and Puerto de San Vicente.
In August 2006, a blaze destroyed more than 2,000 ha in Mohedas. The cultural association La Prazuela was able to collect funds to replant more than 3,000 holy oaks, cork oaks and chestnuts on the burned land.
