He participated in the attack on Odawara Castle in 1590 and was relieved by Toyotomi Hideyoshi of his territories in Hitachi Province and eastern Shimotsuke Province. The war banner has white background with Satake’s family emblem of a red fan with a white circle. The fan has five bones and is circular, representing the moon. The Satake fan is often thought of as a "sun fan," but in Satake's case it depicts the moon. Until modern times, the sun and moon were generally represented by circles, with the sun in red and the moon in silver or white in Japan.
