The coat of arms was designed by the architect Humberto Murillo Lozano, being approved by the council on 30 May 1990. Description according to Héraldica Municipal de Chihuahua:

The shield is chopped and sliced, forming 4 sections which comprend the following blazons from top to bottom and left to right: the effigy of a Spaniard forward to that of a Tarahumara, representing the races as bases of mestizaje, a jug or esquipe, tool for extracting metal of the Mines [with a bar of silver and gold, two coins of each also shown], it was used in past times, a pine tree represents the forestal wealth of the municipality. The highest hill of the State (above 3000 Mts) or the Mohinora occupies the fourth section, Mohinora is a Tarahumara word and signifies “Head between clouds”. The Temple of Guadalupe representing the Catholic faith, the year of 1745 makes allusion to the discovery of the Mine of San Juan Nepomuceno, the shield carries as a complement a ribbon with the name of the founding Mine: Juan Nepomuceno; this shield is crested by a crown, a pick and shovel the first, because these lands pertain to the Kingdom of Spain, the second ones to reaffirm the mining vocation of the municipality.

The sides read the motto “HONOR ESFUERZA” [Honor, Effort]; the top of the bordure reads “GPE. Y CALVO CHIHUAHUA”, with the code 08 to the left for the state and the code 029 to the right for the municipality; these are codes used by INEGI for statistical purposes.
