The coat of arms was designed by the architect Humberto Murillo Lozano, being approved by the council on 4 November 1989. Description according to Héraldica Municipal de Chihuahua:
Resolved on frange, which means chopped and sliced, with which its field that is Spanish is divided into four sections [by a branch and the Florido River] whose blazons are: The nude arm of Christ, crossed with a dressed arm of a Franciscan that reminds us of who evangelized the region (Franciscans) the profile-view head of a cow represents cattle-raising, the Aztec symbol which signifies hot water makes reference to the watering hole of Atotonilco which exists in the municipal seat, two wolves carrying prey, the surname López is derived from a wolf and a walnut in clear allusion to fruit production and a Christian cross behind the walnut makes reference to the Catholic religion, the bordure in its upper part carries two shields of the Tobosos [swastikas in orange], in its lower part the original name of the Municipality: Atotonilco, the shield is crested by a crown [and two stalks of wheat] which reminds us that these lands pertained to the Kingdom of Spain, two seeds of bean represent agriculture, the shield is surrounded by branches of mesquite to the manner of a wreath.
At the top of the bordure is the name "LOPEZ CHIHUAHUA", with the code 08 to the left for the state and 039 to the right for the municipality; these are codes used primarily by INEGI for statistical purposes.
