The coat of arms was adopted on 26 October 1942, during the administration of Octavio Ramos (1942-1944). Apparently the coat of arms was decided upon through a vote, being designed by the professor Francisco R. Almada and Leandro Carreón. Description according to Héraldica Municipal de Chihuahua:
Of rounded form (circle), with the incision of the Río Bravo [or Rio Grande] in its upper-right part, in the rounded area (bordure) the motto was written: "Unión, Trabajo, Progreso" [Union, Work, and Progress; plus the name at the top], it is divided into 3 sections: in the upper the profiles of a soldier and an indigene (bases of mestizaje). In the second the Mexican flag, in the third the Río Bravo [sic; the Conchos River which connects to the Rio Grande], and in its extremes the products of the region: its petroleum potential, wheat, cattle [cow and bull], a bale of cotton, and plants of the same. The shield also represents the agricultural lands close to the River and the mountains of Santa Cruz [represented with a cross, a literal translation of the name].
On the bordure of the central area, "MUNICIPIO MATACHI" is read at the top, 1895 at the bottom the year it became a municipality. In the scrolled parts at the top, "TIJARARE" and "SAN RAFAEL 1667";
the name of the original indigenous settlement here and the mission established by the Jesuits, respectively. The shield itself, not the inner area, is outlined in bronze.
