In a civic ceremony held in the main plaza on 21 March 1951, the coat of arms was unveiled. It was designed by Manuel Márquez and Manuel Torres, being adopted through a call for proposals from the municipal government under Municipal President Isauro Hinojos. A jury was composed of Professor Josefina Beckman B., Professor Daniel Royval M. and Isauro Hinojos. The motto on the coat of arms was created by José Guadalupe Rocha. Description according to Héraldica Municipal de Chihuahua:
In the upper part (section in chief) the instruments of work in the mine are drawn [pick and shovel; helmet with light stylized] and the motto of the Parralenses "Sobre todo la fe" [Over everything the faith]. Below this two interlocking hands. The shield is divided into four sections (quadrants), defined by a horizontal line which crosses in its center with the Parral River, that of which snakes across the city [with six bridges over it]. In the upper sections the head of a Tarahumara and the hill of the Mine La Prieta. In the lower ones the Temple of San José and the head of a Spaniard. Over the margin appear two leaves of wine and a cluster of grapes in the right and left sides, and in the lower part the first name of the locality: San Joseph del Parral. The shield is resolved over French field (ogive).
