The coat of arms was designed by the architect Humberto Murillo Lozano, being adopted by the council on 22 May 1990. Description according to Héraldica Municipal de Chihuahua:

It is designed over Spanish field, it is integrated by four sections and escutcheon, its blazons are: The symbol of the Jesuits that were the evangelizers of the region, a carbide lamp in reference to mining, a blanket and jug make allusion to Tarahumara artisanry, the Temple of the Mission of Cerocahui represents the Catholic religion, the center of the shield is occupied by an escutcheon, this carrying as blazons a pine tree crossed by two wolves carrying prey signifying respectively the forestal wealth and the tenacity placed by the inhabitants of this municipality in what they propose, a Christian cross makes reference (behind the pine tree) to the Catholic religion. The year of 1690 corresponds to the year in which the founding mine was discovered: "El Rosario or la Patrona". This shield carries as a complement a pick and shovel to emphasize the mining vocation of this municipality and a crown which reminds us that these lands pertained to the Kingdom of Spain.

The bordure carries an oil derrick on each lower corner. The upper corners carry a pine tree, symbolic of the local flora. The upper part of the border also carries the words "URIQUE CHIHUAHUA", with the code 08 to the left for Chihuahua and to the right the code 065 for Urique; these are used by INEGI for statistical purposes.
