Coat of Arms

from licenciasconducir.cozumel.gob.mx

The coat of arms was designed by the painter Elio Carmichael, also the designer of the state's coat of arms, in 1980 or 1981 as he painted a mural of the state. This version is a more recent version; it has the shape of a shield, is simplified, and the sea is closer to blue than purple in color. The blue background represents the sea, with the sun over it representing the quality of the municipality being in the easternmost region of the country; and the swallow facing the sun representing the name Cozumel (Land of the Swallows). The swallow holds a sword signifying the Spanish conquest of the Maya lands.
