Sør-Aurdal has one of the only municipalities in Norway that has old wooden churches (stavkirke) that are still being in use, namely the Hedalen stavkirke from ca. 1150 and the Reinli stavkyrkje from ca. 1275.
The design shows in a stylized form the mid-13th century gilt-copper medieval reliquary (chasse) from the Hedalen church. The two dragon heads symbolizes the two churches, while the box represent the church building itself. The five points of the patriarchal cross at the top, as well as the five arched widows, represent the five parishes in the municipality.
Gold symbolizes the brass medieval reliquary box. The blue stands for the two rivers - the basis for logging and sawmills as the main industries in the municipality.
