About the Flag

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain white field.

Coat of arms

Shield Vert divided by a bend sinister wavy Azure fimbriated Argent, in dexter chief a castle Or and a lion rampant Argent, holding a square banner Argent charged with the Cross of the Knights of the Order of Christ having a pole Or, in sinister base a shepherd's staff Or carrying three calabashes of the same. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and yellow scroll with inscription in black initials "RIBEIRINHA".
Meaning:
Castle, lion (Castilia and Leon) and the banner are reminding on Captain Manuel Jacques de Oliveira, who attacked the Spanish and conquered the castle of São Sebastião in Angra. The sinister bend wavy is a canting element representing the banks of a local creek. The commune's name means "location on the banks". Staff and calabashes are alluding to the former tradition of herding and to honour the shepherds, who supplied the city of Angra in the past.
