About the Flag

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain white field.

Coat of arms

Shield Azure, issuant from base a mountain Argent, in chief two keys crossed per saltire, the bendy one Or, the sinister bendy one Argent, kept together by a broken chain Argent. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials "S. PEDRO FINS - MAIA".
Keys and chain are representing the imprisoned St. Peter, name giver and local patron saint of the commune. The mountain is representing the Mountain São Miguel - O - Arcanjo, the highest mountain in Maia municipality. On every 1st Sunday in July a pilgrimage to the mountain occurs in order to honour the Archangel St. Michael. The blue colour is symbolizing loyalty, nobility and optimism of the local people.
