It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain white field.

Coat of arms

Shield Azure with base wavy of Azure and Argent crowned by a three peaks Or, charged with a sheep passant Sable, in chief a 5-point star Argent flanked by two paly spears Or shafted Argent. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials: "SANTA MARIA - MANTEIGAS".
Meaning:
The star probably is an attribute of St. Mary, name giver of the commune and as Our Lady of Immaculate Conception local patron saint.

Santa Maria Commune is one of the four communes of the Manteigas municipality (q.v.); it had 1418 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 24.5 km².
