Coat of arms

The arms are Vert a fess scaly of Or and Sable between a pair of mussles respectant Argent open and emphasized Sable in chief and a watermill wheel Or in base. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters . "MEXILHOEIRA GRANDE".
Meaning:
"Mexilhoeira grande" means "large mussel place" and the arms are twice canting, with blue mussles (Latin:Mytilus edulis) on it in naturalistic fashion and stylized as scales on the fess. (I bet the original version of the arms had a second wheel in chief, as one reference to mussles would be enough and more elegant.)
António Martins-Tuválkin, 16 Mar 2008

Flag and arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário da República: III Série in 2001.03.06.
