Meaning:
The Portuguese chapter of the Order of the Templars was installed by King D. Afonso Henrique and played an important role during the fight against the Moors. The King granted all ecclesiastical rights of Santarém to the order after the capture of the city. Due to a conflict with D. Gilberto, the 1st bishop of Lisboa, the Templars lost all churches of Santarém except the Church of St. James (S. Tiago). They gained instead the castle of Ceras as a compensation. The parish church of Alviobeira had been a vicarage of the Order of Christ. Corn cob and olive branch are reminding on the amount of crops which had to be paid by the local tenants to the Order of Christ
