It is a fairly typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a quartered red and white background (town rank).

The arms are Azure a bend chequy of three orders Argent and Gules between two bunches of grapes Or and overall a base wavy Argent charged with a barrulet wavy Azure. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "SALZEDAS".
Meaning:
The chequered bend is alluding to the Cistercians.
