It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain white field.

Coat of Arms

Shield Azure with base wavy of Argent and Vert, on central chief point a dragon volant Argent armed Gules, in flanches two sails Argent with mast Sable ordered per fess. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VELAS - S. JORGE".
Meaning:
The base wavy is a representation of the Atlantic Ocean. The sails (Portuguese: velas) are canting elements.

Presentation of Velas

Velas is one of the six communes of Velas Municipality. It had 1985 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 15,18 km².
