okres Poprad, adopted 17 Mar 1995 - The first written reference about the
village is from the year 1326. The highest peak of the High Tatras, the
Gerlachovský peak (2655 m) was named according to the village. It is situated
in the middle of the High Tatras mountain ridge. The village was founded
by gold diggers - what is symbolized by crossed hammers in its coat-of-arms.
The oldest building is a tower of a Roman-Catholic church from the 13-th
century. The population of the village is about 800 people.
