Contest

There is currently a proposal for a design of a commemorative flag celebrating the 125th anniversary of Utah's statehood (January 4, 1896). This initiative is carried out by "The Organization for a New Utah Flag". Recently (2021) it has been announced that "The Organization for a New Utah Flag (www.newutahflag.org) have officially announced their design for a commemorative Utah State flag to celebrate Utah’s 125th anniversary of Statehood will be sponsored and supported for legislation by Senators Dan McCay, R-Riverton, and Curt Bramble, R-Provo, during the 2021 Legislative Session." (source: http://www.newutahflag.org/press-release).

The final design emerged from a survey ( http://www.newutahflag.org/2020-survey-results, http://www.newutahflag.org/why-a-new-flag and http://www.newutahflag.org/proofs-for-a-new-flag) carried out on January 2020, in which 90.5% prefer the proposed design to the current flag. The design process (http://www.newutahflag.org/design-process) involved submitting some 150 proposals, which were first categorized in a first filter labeled as "Design Catalogue" and then the "finalists", "Designer Favorites". All of these designs have been most likely automatically generated by crossing multiple templates (perhaps through AI) and are not individual submissions.

Symbolism of the flag is fully explained in a flyer:
"The Beehive State. A new, bold Beehive design, the primary symbol for “The Beehive State” takes center stage, proudly declaring who Utah is to the world.
"Crossroads of the West. Known as “The Crossroads of the West,” the new flag symbolizes this moniker, and the history of Promontory Point, with the unique criss-cross design that intersects in the center of the flag at the Beehive.
Statehood. Symbolizing Utah’s statehood in the United States of America, the white star represents Utah joining the Union in 1896 and its place on the nation’s flag.
Five Native Tribes. The flag’s five quadrants (North, East, South, West, and Center) honor the five Native Tribes of Utah: the Ute, Paiute, Navajo, Shoshone, and Goshute peoples.
Utah Red. The southern quadrant of the flag, filled in red, represents the world famous Red Rocks and national parks of Southern Utah.
Mountain White. White, found in the east and west quadrants, represents the majestic, snow-capped Rocky Mountains of Utah. Known for the “Greatest Snow on Earth,” the white serves as a reminder to this fact.
Liberty blue. A carry over from the current flag, the blue of the new flag represents both the tradition of Utah and the Great Salt Lake, and is found in the northern quadrant.
