Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, issuant from base a triplemount Vert, crowned by a chapel Argent masoned Sable with port and windows of the same, chapel and its turret are covered by a roof Azure, crowned by three crosslets Or; the chapel is flanked by four trees Vert.
Meaning:
The village was a dominion of Hesse since 1301 and gained city rights after 1414. The Lords of Kappel as vassals of the Counts of Hesse had been the local rulers. The arms are canting, the name means "chapel in the wood". The chapel alone first appeared on the oldest seal of the city from 1581 and the 2nd seal from the 17th century seal also shows only a chapel. Since 1605 (Siebmacher) in armourials the trees as canting elements have been added.
