Introduction

Former Landgrafschaft, consisting of the Herrschaft Homburg on this side of the Rhine and the Herrschaft Meisenheim on the other side of the Rhine; 275 km²; at first part of the Landgrafschaft Hessen-Darmstadt; 1622-1866 independent, except for the years 1806-15 when Hessen-Homburg was incorporated into Hessen-Darmstadt. When Landgraf Ferdinand (1846-66) died the dynastic line became extinct on 24 March 1866, whereupon the land reverted to Hessen-Darmstadt; and after the war of 1866 it fell to Prussia; it became part of the province Hessen-Nassau.
